Applications — Palynology and Stratigraphy Across Industries

A Range of Applications

MGPalaeo applies microscopic and sedimentological science across a wide range of geological and environmental contexts. Our work is grounded in rigorous laboratory analysis and stratigraphic understanding, allowing the same core techniques to be applied to very different scientific and operational questions.

Rather than separating our expertise by industry alone, we focus on how our analytical approaches are used to interpret depositional environments, reconstruct past conditions, and support informed decision-making across a range of sectors.

Energy & Resources

MGPalaeo provides biostratigraphic, palynological, and sedimentological support to the energy and resources sector, with applications spanning exploration, appraisal, and development.

Our work includes age dating, palaeoenvironmental interpretation, correlation, and integration with other subsurface datasets.

These services support conventional and unconventional resources, including petroleum systems, CCS, and emerging energy technologies.

Groundwater

Our microfossil and sedimentological analyses are increasingly applied to groundwater studies, where understanding depositional environments, aquifer connectivity, and stratigraphic architecture is critical.

We support groundwater assessments through detailed palaeoenvironmental interpretation, stratigraphic correlation, and laboratory-based analysis that helps constrain aquifer development and evolution.

Archaeology & Cultural Heritage

MGPalaeo provides specialist microbotanical services to archaeological and heritage investigations.

Techniques such as palynology, phytolith, diatom, and microcharcoal analysis are used to reconstruct past environments, assess site formation processes, and support interpretations of human–environment interaction.

Our work integrates closely with archaeological stratigraphy and sedimentological context to deliver robust, defensible results.

Mining & Minerals

MGPalaeo supports mineral exploration through stratigraphic, sedimentological, and microanalytical investigations.

Our work defines cover‑sequence architecture, maps palaeochannel connectivity, constrains fill age, and reduces geological ambiguity above or adjacent to key depositional targets across diverse mineral systems.

These approaches are applied to both regional studies and site-specific investigations in support of exploration and resource evaluation.

Academic & Research Collaboration

With few palynologists now directly employed by universities and geological surveys, a much greater demand has been put on industry to support future biostratigraphic research necessary for the continued development of this science. As such, MGPalaeo has invested heavily of its time in this area and we will continue to do so.

Australia has a long and proud history in palynological research, stretching back to the infancy of the science and the pioneering work of Isabel Cookson and Basil Balme in the 1950s and ‘60s. It is critical that Australia retains a solid academic base to support the training of future palynologists and to provide further innovative palynological solutions to geological problems.
