Purpose-built and experienced

MGPalaeo has a unique, purpose-built laboratory at the Perth office in Western Australia, capable of meeting all of your processing needs.

Our skilled laboratory staff can provide high-quality sample preparations from a wide range of sample types, and we have worked on a diverse portfolio of projects for different industries, including oil & gas, minerals, groundwater, archaeology, beekeeping, civil engineering, carbon capture & storage, and more.

  • Sample processing for all biostratigraphic groups
  • Wide suite of microbotantical services
  • Experience with all sample types
  • No minimum sample requirements
  • Sedimentological sample processing

Laboratory Services

Our laboratory services can be delivered independently or combined into a project-specific preparation program.

Palynology & microfossils

Preparation of samples for palynological analysis for geological studies, forensics, honey, archaeology, and more.

We also support microforam and nannofossil processing, acetate peels and microbotanical recovery from coarse fractions.

Microcharcoal processing

Microcharcoal fragments preserved within soil and sediment samples, extracted via routine palynological processing.

We can also provide macrocharcoal studies via a trusted consultant to improve fire burning studies.

Phytolith processing

Phytolith preparation from artifacts, sediments and plant material, producing clean concentrates for archaeological and environmental investigation.

Where required, piranha solution (sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide) can be used to remove stubborn organic residues.

Diatom processing & permanent mounts

Diatom concentrates prepared from a wide range of sediment types using reproducible workflows designed to preserve frustule integrity.
Permanent Naphrax mounts are available for long-term storage, high-resolution imaging and publication-quality analysis.

Microfossil recovery from chert

Disaggregation of fossiliferous chert to recover microfossils and resistant residues for identification, provenance and archaeological interpretation.

A specialist pathway for material that conventional preparation methods cannot readily unlock.

Specialist acid digestion

Acid digestion and sample preparation for challenging mineral and silica-rich matrices.

  • HF-based digestion for silica-bearing material
  • Perchloric acid capability
  • Four-acid preparation using HF, HNO₃, HClO₄ and HCl

Sedimentological processing

Washing, disaggregation and physical separation of sediments and rocks for sedimentological, palaeontological and mineralogical investigation.

  • Particle-size sieving
  • Heavy-mineral separation using LST
  • Coarse-fraction and microfossil recovery

Legacy microscope slide maintenance

Care and maintenance of valuable microscope slide collections.

Microscope slides degrade over time, with cover slips coming off or the residue drying out. We can help repair these slides so they can be scanned and preserved digitally.
